I browed, I banged, and realized that while each drum was a little different, they were all confusingly similar. The last drum salesman I met invited me to try a drum, and then showed me how the strings held the skin tight to the wood. He showed me how to adjust the tuning of the instrument, and explained how it was made and how to keep it in good condition. Not only did I buy that drum, but I took his card, and now call him first for any new instrument purchases. His drums were not so different, and his price was not better. He added value to the purchase not only through traditional "customer service" but by helping me appreciate the magic of the instrument. It became mine.
